This report, by the National Research Council of Canada, covers the many beneficial aspects associated with rooftop and vertical gardens in urban areas. Both of these technologies were assessed using modeling and observations. The history of vertical gardens is mentioned and referred to;  they were previously used by shopkeepers of Pompeii, Romans, Vikings, pre-Columbian Mexico, India, 16th-17th century Mexico, Russia, other countries once part of the Soviet Union, and France. Vertical gardens make use of usually unused urban wall space and reduce energy combination while also being used to control indoor climates, or for aesthetics.
